Woodintel.io launches open platform for evidence-based timber specification

Free platform publishes service-life model, methodology, datasets and validation results for exterior timber.

GOTHENBURG, Sweden — WoodIntel™ (woodintel.io) today launched an independent open platform that enables architects, engineers, developers, contractors and researchers to generate traceable service-life estimates for exterior timber.

The platform brings together European standards, climate reference data and peer-reviewed durability research in a single workflow. Every estimate is fully traceable and includes the equations, assumptions, source data, uncertainty and references used to produce the result.

Unlike conventional specification tools, WoodIntel also publishes the evidence used to evaluate its own model.

The current service-life model has been benchmarked against 24 documented field trials and in-service inspections, and the complete validation benchmark is publicly available, including cases where the model performs poorly. Blind leave-one-out validation gives a mean absolute error of 9.5 years, while 83.3% of observed outcomes fall within the published P10–P90 uncertainty interval.

WoodIntel is free to use, requires no account and is available in six languages at launch.

Key characteristics

Transparent methodology

Every prediction can be traced to the equations, assumptions, datasets and references from which it was generated.

Published validation

WoodIntel publishes its model specification, calibration layer, validation benchmark, residuals and interval coverage, allowing independent assessment of model performance.

Brand-neutral

The platform does not promote suppliers or commercial products. Comparisons are based on published evidence relating to timber species, treatments and construction detailing.

Reproducible

Method specifications, calibration files and validation datasets are versioned and available for download under the CC BY 4.0 licence in CSV and JSON formats.

Published uncertainty

Rather than presenting a single deterministic value, WoodIntel reports P10, P50 and P90 estimates together with the principal contributors to model uncertainty.

Public review service

Users may submit claims relating to wood durability for review against published standards and research. Completed reviews are published together with their supporting sources.

First public WoodIntel Index

The first WoodIntel Index contains 288 modelled service-life estimates covering 12 timber species across six climate zones.

One of the principal findings is that climate can have a greater influence on modelled service life than species selection.

For the same timber, estimated service life differs by 28 years between the mildest and harshest climate conditions represented in the index. Orientation alone changes the modelled estimate by up to 4.9 years.

These figures are modelled estimates with published uncertainty and should not be interpreted as measured service-life values.

WoodIntel was created to make timber specification more transparent. Instead of asking users to accept a result, we publish the methodology, datasets and validation needed for others to examine, reproduce and improve the work. We believe that better evidence, openly available, leads to better specification decisions.

Funding and independence

WoodIntel was initiated and funded by SiOO:X Wood Protection.

SiOO:X has no influence over model results, benchmark cases or published conclusions. This relationship is disclosed openly on the platform.

The published methodology, datasets and validation results enable independent third parties to reproduce and evaluate the published findings.
